Hi, I'm Carolyn,
This is my story navigating childhood financial trauma and scarcity, to Entrepreneur and Financial Psychologist
I'm 15 years old ....
..standing in the kitchen of my parents home, watching my mom clean the same patch of work surface over and over again. She's not here with me, she's somewhere else in her head.
and I glance at my mom, she doesn't move. I step out into the hallway and as I do I glance to my left, through the half open lounge door. There in the corner is my stepfather, crouched down on all fours, rocking backwards and forwards. he has tears in his eyes. As I move towards the front door I'm puzzled to see a pack of black shapes through the frosted glass. As I reach for the door handle I feel a shiver run down my back and my mind tumbles into nothingness. I have never felt so alone. Little did I know what I was about to face.
Until that moment I had no idea that my stepdad had lost his job, that my parents had overstretched themselves financially and were about to have their house repossessed. My life was about to change massively and without knowing it, I was building my future relationship with money
I was desperate to fit in with a group of friends who were far wealthy than me. Each time I'd try not to think about the money and i'd ignore the bills when they arrived. I got myself into thousands of pounds worth of debt and my mental health suffered. I retrained to be a HR Manager in charge of employee health & safety because I thought HR might have the answers (but they didn't) and I kept doing the same behaviours (it was like I was on autopilot). Even when I'd cleared the debt, I couldn't stop spending money on books, courses and personal development. Eventually I burnt out, ehausted myself and decided self-employment would be less stressful (how little did I know!)
I was procrastinating, sabotaging and lying about money ...
Once my business was established things went from bad to worse. My relationship with money was beginning to affect every aspect of my life, from my self-esteem and confidence, to my marriage and my business performance. I was lying to my husband about money, spending money that I couldn't afford but that made me feel better and then desperately overworking to get more clients to pay the bills.
What happened is a story for another time, but the exhaustion made me stop and get curious. At 43, I went back to University to study Psychology and began training in Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT / Tapping). Finally I had found the clarity and the solutions to my relationship with money.
You're not bad, or stupid or lazy if you're looking at your finances and wondering "how the hell did I end up here?'. It's not your fault, if you've gotten yourself into debt, if you don't have the savings you want or if your money isn't where you want it to be. Your mindset and nervous system have been programmed to keep you safe, even if that means you overspend, undercharge, hoard money and under-value yourself. Your money stories are creating resistance to wealth and you have an opportunity to rewrite your money story if you want to
If you're ready to change your story about money, connect with me and let's get started
